Essential Services: How Municipalities Serve Their Communities
As part of Florida City Week (#FLCityWeek), the Town of Howey-in-the-Hills is highlighting the vital services that municipalities provide to their residents each and every day.
Municipal governments are responsible for many of the services that directly affect our daily lives—maintaining safe streets and clean water, ensuring public safety, planning for responsible growth, and supporting recreation, culture, and education. These essential services form the foundation of a community’s quality of life.
Every municipality determines how best to deliver these services—through Town departments, regional collaborations, or contracted providers—based on the unique needs and priorities of their residents.

Here in Howey-in-the-Hills, essential services are provided by a dedicated team of professionals who take pride in serving our community:
-
Police Department, led by Chief Michael Giddens, working tirelessly to keep our residents and visitors safe.
-
Public Services Department, directed by Morgan Cates, maintaining our streets, parks, and utility systems with care and efficiency.
-
Marianne Beck Memorial Library, under the leadership of Amanda Molden, enriching the community through learning, literacy, and connection.
These departments—and the employees who staff them—embody the spirit of service that defines municipal government. Their commitment ensures that Howey-in-the-Hills remains a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained place to live, work, and visit.
